Python or Javascript: Which skill has more job market demand? Which commands a higher salary?

Is Python or Javascript more important to an AWS Cloud Architect?

Wouldn’t it be easier to decide which course to take next if you knew the salary range for the skills you will learn?
Choosing your education path is easier when you know:
- the demand for specific programmer skills, and
- the average coding salary you can expect to earn with those skills
That’s why I compiled the salary information from current job listings to answer these questions, and now I am sharing my findings with you.
This is the approach I used to get maximum dollar back when I was in the programming business.
I checked the demand for skills and then pointed my education toward the highest pay.
I learned C when Sun Microsystems was shaping the software market. When Microsoft took over, I learned C# and .NET (and taught them at training centers and workshops).
I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the incredible productivity power of VB6, but C# salaries shot right past VB6 in months.
Whether you are looking at AWS Cloud, machine learning, or Javascript; or whether you want to become a WordPress front-end or back-end web developer, if money matters, so should the skills you learn.
So let’s jump into which skills you can learn that will pay you back in benefits and salary.

Methodology: How this Data Was Collected and Compiled
Where I Got the Data
My original intent was to pull data from several job websites.
I used results from Indeed.com but not from Monster.com, Linked.com, or SimplyHired.com.
The advanced search features on those other sites didn’t work.
As a result, I had no way to single out Javascript from Python jobs and vice versa.
The data in this study is solely from Indeed.com.
I collected the data starting on August 21, 2023.
I did not specify a search location, so they are “worldwide.”
Adjustments to Data
I pulled data for:
- Javascript without Python (Search: Javascript NOT Python)
- Python without Javascript (Search: Python NOT Javascript)
- Python and Javascript (Search: Python AND Javascript)
- Python or Javascript (Search: Python OR Javascript)
The total number of job listings for the first three should have summed up to the value of the 4th:
(Javascript Listings) plus (Python Listings) plus (Javascript AND Python) Listings = (Python or Javascript Listings)
However, the results would change before I could finish collecting the queries.
My recorded result for (Python OR Javascript) was slightly different than the sum of the first three queries.
Therefore, instead of using the actual results I got for (Python OR Javascript), I used the sum from the first three queries.
Had the database not moved under my feet while I searched, that summation would have been the actual result I got.
How I Calculated the Number of Listings per Pay Range
Indeed.com offers a dropdown to narrow a search by the pay provided with the job listing.
You can choose a value from the dropdown, which puts a floor under your search: “Show me jobs that offer this pay rate or higher.”
Next to each pay bucket is a value representing how many job listings are at that pay rate or above.
Each pay range contains all of the listings above it.
For example, (Python OR Javascript) showed the following pay ranges:
Table: Python OR Javascript Pay Ranges
Pay Range | Number of Listings |
---|---|
$85K+ | 75,786 |
$105K+ | 61,647 |
$120K+ | 46,005 |
$135K+ | 29,997 |
$155K+ | 15,295 |
The 75,786 next to $85K+ represents the listings that pay at least $85K.
Embedded in the 75,786 job listings that pay at least $85K are all the jobs that pay $105K+, $120K+, and so on.
I subtracted the first range above each number to derive the absolute number per range.
For example, to find the number of listings for $85-105K, I subtracted the $105K+ number of listings (61,647) from the $85K+ number of listings (75,786) to get 14,139 $85-$105K listings.
I subtracted all job listings already accounted for by the next highest pay range bucket.
To find the number of listings for $105K to $120K, I subtracted the $120K+ number from the $105K number: 61,647-46,005 to get an absolute number of 15,642 job listings in the $105k-$120K range.
These subtractions resulted in discrepancies between the total listings and those assigned to pay ranges. This discrepancy had to belong in the $0-85K range, as all other listings were accounted for.
The result was this data:
Table: Number of Python or Javascript Listings by Pay RangeSearch: Python OR Javascript | |
---|---|
Pay Range | Number of Job Listings |
$30K-85K | 19,375 |
$85-105K | 14,139 |
$105-120K | 15,642 |
$120-155K | 30,710 |
$155K+ | 15,295 |
Indeed doesn’t have a bucket for job listings that pay below $85K, so I had to derive the number of listings by deduction.
Conclusion
The market for AWS and cloud engineers is strong. Python remains the most popular cloud programming language.
Salaries are still good for Cisco Certified Network Associates, too.
Companies are still interested in certified technical help, but like to see at least a Bachelor’s degree as well. There are exceptions seeking only high school or GED plus certification.
Hot WordPress Developer skills include Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Photoshop, PHP, HTML and CSS.
